Everyone has their hot button topics.
Some are obvious; some are well hidden. Some are reasonable; some are just plain stupid.
This page is tilting at a windmill in a quixotic attempt to shine a little light on the portrayal (or lack of portrayal) of women in the world of comics.
This isn't new stuff. I'm not saying anything that hasn't been said before by better writers than I.
Since I'm sure it will be asked...since we live in a world where girls kidnapped from schools and genital mutilation occurs and there are big, HUGE social injustices happening daily, why am I wasting time on trying to change geek culture, instead of the more important battles?
Because this is a battle, however small, that needs to be fought. If we wait until the rest of the world gets crap together before we fight the 'little' battles, those little battles will never be fought. And those little battles take their toll on people in little ways too.
So, this is the battle I'm choosing to fight right now. I fight other fights--little fights and big ones on a day-to-day basis. On this page, right now, this is the battle I picked. It may very well be a waste of my time (although, assuming it is, that also makes it a waste of your time that you're here reading it, so we can be slacker time wasters together); you're free to consider it one of the stupider hot-button issues to have, but I think that bringing awareness to the lack of inclusion of 50% of the population is something worth being irritated about.
