Pretty close to a verbatim conversation at my house today.
ME: Ok, who do you want to be? (listing characters--Hulk, Wolverine, Iron Man, Silver Surfer, Falcon, and one more I'm forgetting--also male)
SMALL HERO: Uhm, why aren't there any GIRL choices
ME: Because the people who make the game (Marvel, Nintendo, THQ) are stupid (this may not be stellar parenting, but I didn't have a better answer on the fly.
SMALL HERO: Oh. Well, I don't want to play this game anymore then.
Funny, isn't it, that the claim is constantly made that girls 'just aren't into' 'just aren't a market share', 'don't buy toys'. Game developers and toy manufacturers and comic companies make all male sets that force girls out of the picture. And then they justify the girls on the cutting room floor by pointing out that girls aren't jumping up and down to play the games they've been cut out of.
(And I'll try to play Superhero Squad with her another day, but, for today, we switched to a @Mario game where she played Princess Peach. This was much easier when she thought Thor was a girl all the time, not just in some comics.)
